In memory of Lyudmila Alekseeva

On December 8, Lyudmila Alekseeva passed away. She was 91 years old.

The actual human rights movement in Russia cannot be imagined without this person. It is symbolic that she left us on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Human Rights Declaration. Almost half of her life was connected with Moscow Helsinki Group, the oldest human rights organization. Always ready to help, sincere courageous and responsive for many people Lyudmila Mikhailovna has become a symbol of fearlessness and freedom. Many young people inspired by her example have become active defenders of human rights.

Lyudmila Alekseeva herself followed the principles of the All-Russia civil forum: “Dialogue, solidarity, responsibility”. She strictly criticized violations of rights, repressive legislation, participated in demonstrations and protests but at the same time she did not refuse the dialogue, was a member of the Human Rights Council, did not miss the opportunity to express her position to the country's leadership, to protect a particular person. She was respected also by the authorities who really recognized the scale of her personality.

We are grateful that we had the opportunity to work with her.

We deeply regret and express our condolences to Lyudmila Alekseeva’s relatives and friends.
